Kuranda

Wednesday, January 22, 2019

We took a train ride through the beautiful rainforest.  Construction of the Cairns-Kuranda Railway was, and still is, an engineering feat of tremendous magnitude.  The Kuranda Scenic Railway travels on a narrow gauge which measures 3 feet and 6 inches.

Stoney Creek Falls Bridge is the most outstanding feature of the railway line. The iron lattice construction was completed in the mid 1890s and stands on three trestle piers. The bridge has a tight 4 chain radius. After its completion, a marquee was erected and a special lunch was organized for the then Governor, Sir Henry Norman and dignitaries.

We explored the quaint and charming city of Kuranda with it’s local marketplace and beautiful people.  It was here I bought Avery some opal earrings.  Opals come from Australia.  I also bought Evan a boomerang.

After our trip to Kuranda, we visited the Aboriginal Park.  We learned how to throw boomerangs, spears, dance and sing with our Aboriginal friends.  We learned more about their culture and their stories.  We learned about their creator and grandfather, the rainbow serpent.

Tomorrow we will be heading to Sydney!

Love to all!
