The Heart of Australia…Uluru

I come from the Dreamtime, from the dusty red soil plains
I am the ancient heart, the keeper of the flames
I stood upon the rocky shore, I watched the tall ships come
For eighty thousand years I've been the first Australian.

The outback....

It is very hard to explain this sacred place. To the indigenous people of Australia, this place is like Bethlehem or Gethsemane to the Christians.

Many of you are probably familiar with the legendary Uluru rock often referred to as the heart of Australia.  Uluru, Kata Tjuta and the land around them have always been very special places for the aborigines.  This was the site of sacred aboriginal rituals and revered and cared for by the aboriginal people.

We began the day with a flight around the rock and across the face.  Uluru is the largest monolith in the world.  Uluru is made from a sedimentary rock called arkose sandstone, a coarse-grained sandstone rich in the mineral feldspar.  Kata Tjuta is made from a sedimentary rock called conglomerate – a mix of gravel, pebbles and boulders cemented together.  Weathering of Uluru gives the rock its red color.  The iron minerals in the rock weathered by water and oxygen in a similar effect to iron rusting.

In the evening, we watched the sunset at Uluru with champagne, cheese and fruit, and sang Australian songs.

“I came from the dreamtime, from the dusty red soil plains

I am the ancient heart, the keeper of the flames

I stood on the rocky shore, I watched the tall ships come

For forty thousand years I’ve been the first Australian.”

Love to all,

DD
